Everyone wants their apprenticeship and traineeship to be a positive experience, but things can occasionally go wrong.
Perhaps you’re not getting the training you expected or there are issues with the workplace. Whatever the problem, there are people who can help you resolve the issue.

- request credit towards your apprenticeship
- withdraw from your training contract during the probationary period
- suspend or terminate your apprenticeship
- transfer to a new employer or a new training provider
- apply for completion of your apprenticeship
The first step to change your apprenticeship is to talk to your employer, as you’ll need to agree on these changes. They will submit the paperwork for you.

If you’re not satisfied with the quality or delivery of your training, talk to your training provider. If you are still not satisfied, follow their complaint process and lodge your complaint in writing.
The South Australian Skills Commission provides a free and independent complaint handling and dispute resolution service that helps you understand your rights and responsibilities. If you are experiencing any difficulties with your training, call 1800 006 488.

If your problem has still not been resolved, you can bring it to the attention of the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), as long as you have already:
- made a complaint directly to your training provider, and
- received a response which does not resolve your issue, and
- requested an independent review of your complaint and your issue is still not resolved to your satisfaction.
While ASQA does not resolve individual disputes between students and training providers, they can use your feedback to support training providers to improve the quality of their service delivery.
ASQA also provides information on their website about other organisations which may be able to assist with your complaint.
If you are undertaking a Higher Education apprenticeship or traineeship and you have concerns regarding the quality or delivery of your training, please raise these concerns directly with the training provider in the first instance.
If your training provider closes unexpectedly, the Australian Skills Quality Authority can help you get records of your completed training, change training providers, find out about your VET Student Loan and continue training under your training contract.
If you are undertaking a Higher Education apprenticeship or traineeship and your training provider closes, please contact the Department for Innovation and Skills on 1800 673 097 for advice specific to your circumstances.
If you’re having an issue with your employer, we want to make sure you get the help you need to work through it.
First up, make sure you speak to your employer about the issue and the impact it’s having on you. A lot of the time, just having the conversation will make things better. If not, here’s what can happen next:
- We can chat to you about other ways to resolve the issue, and let you know what your responsibilities are under the training contract.
- We can meet with you and your employer to help you both discuss the issue and understand the options available under an apprenticeship.
- If the issue is still unresolved, you can lodge your dispute with the South Australian Employment Tribunal. They will arrange a conciliation conference with you and your employer. Most employers and apprentices come to an agreement at the conference.

Support to keep your training on track
Is life getting in the way of your subsidised training? Are you finding it hard to keep up with your work and study? Or do you need a hand to move on to further work or study?
Learner Support Services can help you with:
- living, learning and transition issues
- improving study skills
- accessing support available in your community.
You can access Learner Support Services for up to 12 weeks after you finish your course. This can help you move successfully into employment or further study.
Talk to your training provider about getting support to help you overcome barriers to your training. They can refer you to a Learner Support Services provider.
SafeWork SA can tell you everything you need to know about safe working environments and your rights and responsibilities as an apprentice in the workplace.
Support is available if you injure yourself at work or experience bullying or harassment.

Copies of trade certificates
If you’ve lost your trade certificate or certificate of competency, you can request a replacement. They will be mailed out to you within 3-4 weeks.
You can apply for a replacement trade certificate. You’ll need to outline the reason that your original certificate has been lost or destroyed.
